The Whispering Thicket is a stand of silver birch on the lane's eastern edge, where the trees grow close and their pale bark catches every sort of light. The wind that comes through the thicket does not merely pass — it speaks, or seems to, in a tongue no one on the lane has ever quite learned but everyone has, at one time or another, understood.
It has been the custom, as long as anyone remembers, to tie a ribbon to a branch when you carry a question too heavy to hold alone. Colored ribbons for joys, plain for sorrows, knotted for things yet undecided. And sometimes — not always, but sometimes — an answer comes: found in the morning tucked among the roots, or simply known, suddenly, on the walk home.
The thicket is never still, and never quite empty. The forest faeries keep to its deeper places, tending the moss and the mushrooms, and they will whisper the weather to anyone patient enough to listen for it.
