Region of the Lane

Bramblebrook Hollow

Where the brook babbles secrets to the ferns

Bramblebrook Hollow

Bramblebrook Hollow lies in the low dip of the lane, where the land folds inward and water gathers. A brook runs through its heart โ€” not a rushing thing, but a slow, clear voice that never stops talking. The folk say it has opinions, and they listen to it more than to most. For most of its length the brook is left wild โ€” the folk do not bridge it or bank it or tidy its edges, but let it wander where it will among the ferns and the roots.

Where the brook widens, though, the land opens up too. Backed up behind an old tumble of glacial rocks and the patient dams of generations of beaver-like creatures the folk call brook-beavers, the water spreads into a small, shallow lake โ€” quiet, bright, and thick with reeds. A community has grown up around its shore: no more than a dozen houses, built low and weathered, several of them home to one large family of fishermen who have pulled the same waters for as long as anyone remembers. The hollow is sheltered, and so it is the first place green returns each spring; the beekeepers move their hives along the banks so the bees never have far to fly, and a potter โ€” the best on the lane, by a fair margin โ€” keeps her wheel by the water for the fine pale clay the lake leaves behind when it drops in late summer.

One heron lives in the hollow โ€” tall, grey, and unbothered by anything the lane can produce. It stands in the shallows for hours, and no one has ever seen it catch a fish it did not deserve.
